The Elkhart River flows through private property, state owned land and county park land. Please respect the land along the river. Take pictures but leave the plants, shells, mussells, and other natural items where there are.
You can help improve the river by taking a small trash bag along and picking out some of the debris that does not belong. Plastic bottles, shopping bags, and old bait containers make the worst appearance, but old fishing line is the item hardest on unsuspecting wildlife, especially birds, which may pick it up.
Some sections of the river are more open than others. Volunteers from the ERRA donate time, effort, and money to keeping the river open.
Land owners along the river also contribute their time. State and County Government have contracted for removal of trees in the river. When the flow is high, fallen trees are less of an obstacle. When the river flow is down, even the smallest branch in some sections of the river become an obstacle.
When the North Branch Cosperville gauge reads above 200 cubic feet per second the rivers in LaGrange and Noble counties are close to “Bank Full” and trees in the river can usually be passed.
